Yeil Joo

*1988 in Suwon, South Korea

What can be forever? Yeil Joo asks herself and those who view her works this question, in which she addresses consumer culture and its transience in modern society. She uses the material sugar because of its ambivalent meaning: sugar melts and thus witnesses the process of change. Sugar sweetens life – and harms us at the same time.

Bitcoins made from sugar embody the “sweet” dream of getting rich quickly. But how realistic is this dream really? How real can a currency even be that has no material equivalent?
